The Sound of Language (updated version 2023)

In coproduction with  Habibi Kiosk of  Münchner Kammerspiele, Munich, permanent collection Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice, thanks to  Galleria Michela Rizzo, Venice

What you are going to hear is completely meaningless. You will undergo the experience of listening to some poems which are semantically unrecognisable because of the altered order of consonants, though the rime, the metrical scansion, the accent and the intonation are mantained: the result is something absolutly incomprehensible but absurdly familiar. With this work I wish as far as is possible to restore the melody and musicality to be found in every language. In order to do so I have to cleanse words of the “distraction” of meaning and let their rhythmic or melodic aspects, now no longer suffocated by their meaning, come to light.I try to go back through hearing to something primary and forgotten: the pure and ancient sound of words, the raw experience of our first contact with the world.

C Infinite

C Infinite, soundwork, Loop, 2022, recording of a recorded radio sound

      1. do-infinito-di-mariateresa-sartori-9.mp3

Technically, these are fragments of chest C emitted by opera singers. These are recordings taken from the radio that I re-recorded to get the effect of distant, somewhat croaky sound of distant radio.

Having gone through the double recording shifts the emphasis from bel canto, the singing qualities of which we are no longer able to perceive, to the emission of sound, of human breath, and, since it is C di petto, the performative and assertive effort as a manifestation of power is evident, more than other notes.

The succession of C chest notes sung by different tenors proceeds in an ascending scale of tightness, that is, of duration in time and volume: the intent is to move gradually and almost inadvertently from an emission that expresses power, boldness, courage and heroism together, to a sound that is tinged with urgency, anguish, helplessness, gradually becoming a cry of alarm.

It is a succession without pause, without silence, eliminating the phase of inhaling air: everything becomes infinite emission, beyond time, leading to a place that has no beginning and no end: the work goes in a continuous cycle, just as it is proposed at the Studio G7 Gallery in Bologna. The sound source is hidden, the sound comes from nowhere, in a continuous crescendo and diminuendo, seamless.

The Sound of Dante

Sound diptych, 2021

curated by Chiara Bertola

assistant director Armand Deladoey

musical composition Queste parole di colore oscuro by Paolo Marzocchi

The third canto of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno is at the centre of an experimental operation. To emphasise the intrinsic musicality of the Divine Comedy, Dante’s verses are stripped of their meaning, while syntax, metrics and rhyme remain unchanged. The result is something utterly incomprehensible but absurdly familiar. The actors recite the song as if it had its original meaning, inviting us to abandon ourselves to a purely rhythmic-melodic listening of the song. The reading by the actors is followed by Paolo Marzocchi’s piece ‘Queste parole di colore oscuro’ (These words of dark colour), which translates Dante’s text into purely musical terms on the basis of the prosody of the revised chant. The actors were always the same, while the musicians and conductors changed according to the location.

The Concert of the World. Sound Version

music: Stefano Codin, duration: 7’12”, 2008

      1. il-concerto-del-mondo-solo-audio-2.mp3

The concert of the world is the concert of the world’s languages: the intrinsic musicality of every language is underlined by the translation in music of that particular conversation, that is characterized by a certain language,  a certain  timbre of voice,  a certain rythmus. Relating to that every voice has its corresponding instrument.

The concert of the world was broadcast on the national  radio rai tre in the program  Stanze d’artista curated by  Guido Barbieri 30 minutes about Mariateresa Sartori’s sound works,  17 August 2017
