 Dell’arte come conoscenza

Raffaele Gavarro

DRAWN TOGETHER: KATIE HOLTEN AND MARIATERESA SARTORI

KATHY BATTISTA, writer, curator, Director of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, New York

Drawing is one of the most intuitive and ancient, even prehistoric, forms of expression. One finds evidence of drawings since the Paleolithic period when cave dwellers used mark-making to portray mankind’s quotidian experiences hunting and gathering food; this resulted in surprisingly well articulated images of bison and other wild animals that lacked perspective. Flattened forms were also witnessed in ancient Egyptian image making, in which drawings and reliefs continued to appear two dimensional, as if all living creatures were seen in profile. With the Italian Renaissance came perspective and illusionism, where artists such as Donatello, della Quercia and Ghiberti used mathematical equations to represent three-dimensional space on a flat surface. Figures became more lifelike, and artists such as Ghirlandaio and Michelangelo began to employ techniques including foreshortening to create the illusion of three-dimensionality.

Drawing has not only been the fare of individuals but also a group activity: Aboriginal and Native American artists created ephemeral ritualistic sand drawings that eventually disappeared; Surrealist artists played the corpse exquisite game in the 1960s; Carolee Schneemann used groups of performers to create works such as   Meat Joy and Water Light/Water Needle, which resulted in random, intuitive mark-making and formations drawn through choreography and human movement. Contemporary artists Jeremy Deller and Pawel Althamer have encouraged audience participation in their work, thus deflating the modernist ideal of the artist as sole creator genius. This interactive, collaborative method makes drawing among the most radical of practices today, existing in distinction to traditional studio based sculpture and painting. In our late capitalist era of hyperbolic artistic production, where spectacle reigns in both the commercial and institutional spheres, drawing returns to the basics: the artist’s hand in an intimate gesture on a human scale.

It also slows down the frenetic pace of art production: drawings take time, concentration, and in some instances, endurance.

Life drawing was an integral component of any art education, from the Royal Academy and the Beaux Arts until the 1960s when art pedagogy began to reflect the rupture of the dematerialized art practices at the time. Curiously, while drawing may be seen as one of the most longstanding and classical methods of art, and draftsmanship a seeming accolade, today it is often relegated to a lesser status,

seen as less important or secondary to painting and sculpture. A drawing is often associated with the ‘study’ rather than the finished product and most often drawings of an artist carry less commercial weight than that of their other work. But what about artists—for example Vija Celmins or Sol LeWitt—whose practices exhibit an abiding investigation of drawing?

Katie Holten and Mariateresa Sartori both use drawing—in one form or another—as the primary basis in their respective practices. While they hail from different countries, albeit both in Europe (Holten grew up in Ireland and now lives in New York, while Sartori lives in her native Italy), both artists employ drawing in the form of mapping in some form as the base of their work. In neither case will you find traditional still life or figuration; rather these artists use their eyes and hands to translate experience into record, playing with perspective from macro to micro, plan to elevation, or ear to eye. Indeed the title of the exhibition, Linea, refers to the geological strata on the surface of a moon or planet, which can be vast or microscopic. In Italian linea means line, the basis of all drawing, either permanent or ephemeral.

WAYS OF SEEING

Holten’s Constellations are large drawings in white on black primed canvas or paper that resemble nighttime aggregations of stars. Intricate webs of white lines, scattered in clusters, could be read as spiders’ webs, fossils, or microscopic imagery, all of which the artist has in fact drawn in the past. They might also resemble a vast scale: an entire cosmos miniaturized into a six-foot canvas. Holten renders these with real limestone chalk sourced from rock formations of the former Inland Sea. While on a residency in Salina, Kansas she visited this ancient seabed and was awed by the sublime rock patterns found in the landscape. The found chunks of chalk that she gathered are used to create drawings of nighttime aerial images sourced from NASA Earth Observatory. Representing clusters of cities and their connecting autoroutes, these images of immense swathes of landscape can resemble microbiotic organisms or cells. Indeed, these routes are like cells that make up large urban organisms.

Holten uses a laborious process to create these large works that are in fact Vitruvian in scale. The size of the canvas correlates to as far as the artist can reach— from top to bottom and side to side. An earlier series of drawings called Old

News (Yoga Mat I) and Old News (Yoga Mat II) from 2008 also used the body as reference: these drawings were created from multiple layers of newspapers, a reference to the economy of scale in Holten’s production. The artist asked herself: what can I make that can be carried with me, which corresponds to my own body? The Constellations again correspond to human scale, personal experience, and strange parallelism. For a recent exhibition in Düsseldorf, the artist used satellite images of Germany. This translation from eye to hand and then from macro to micro or vice versa, is done with exquisite economy of scale and attention to detail.

This meticulousness is also found in Mariateresa Sartori’s work. The Drawers is a double channel video where two groups of six people are seen from the waist up. The artist filmed her students while they were drawing her, interested in the concept of the relegation of her identity into a sculptural form in space; rather than seeing her as their teacher, they look at her as a figure to draw. Their eyes dart from the page to her and back again. Only the tiniest of movements—of their eyes or their hands as they sketch or rub out mistakes—are registered for the viewer but the psychological shift is immense. Subtle, simple actions rendered significant and like Holten’s Constellations, the small lines—invisible in the case of Sartori’s subjects whose eyes dart and retract to their sketchpads—require the viewer to look further and uncover the action that they are witnessing. It is this same scrutinizing that Holten’s work commands.

A related series of drawings by Sartori reflects the eye movements of this same group of students in small sketches. Resembling a grid of electrocardiographs, 1 minute and 15 seconds of drawers’ gazes is a grid-based artwork composed of 135 individual elements. The artist takes the video from the eye movements of her students while they are drawing and traces this from the computer to register

their exact movements, which are then rendered in line on paper and assembled together. This technique of drawing was begun by Sartori in a residency at the Imera, Institute for Advanced Study, Marseille, where she worked with the physicist Bruno Giorgini to map pedestrian flows; it also relates to her childhood history, as like Holten, she began with drawing, but later turned to video and installation. The result in The Drawers is an archive of ways of seeing, from simple small glances to larger sweeps of vision and thus eye movement. A two-dimensional static counterpart to The Drawers video, this body of drawings recalls the hieroglyphic patterns of earlier civilizations. It is a visual language that Sartori has created to express a story, which is a tale of seeing and translation of experience rather than any epic tale.

Like Holten’s Constellations, Sartori creates works that require endurance and time. The Progressive. Brahms’ Fourth Symphony. New York version is paradigmatic of this laborious process, and is a key work in the Linea exhibition. Here the artist listened repeatedly to this musical composition while making this large-scale drawing. Its title derives from Schoenberg’s description of Brahms’ compositional tool: he started from a core theme and created all variations of that theme on a progression. The thousands of striations in the drawing appear as organic matter: like lines on a leaf or like landscape seen from above. The comparison to Holten’s work is uncanny: the scale shifts from macro to micro; the artist’s both use a painstakingly slow process to create the drawings; and both artists work with black and white, not needing color to render their images.

Holten and Sartori rigorously investigate the act of seeing through practices that challenge the order of the status quo. While neither artist’s work is overtly concerned with gender, their work’s overall project may be seen as a feminist response to the traditional art historical trope of the male gaze. In the case of these contemporary artists, they subvert this process on more than one level: first, as seen above, they both claim abstraction as a language of their own; while rooted in reality, their drawings appear as abstracted compositions of lines and marks. Abstraction has traditionally been the domain of the heroic masculine artist, from Wassily Kandinsky to Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock and the New York school. Artists such as Miriam Schapiro, Judy Chicago and Judy Pfaff challenged this arena, reclaiming authorship of abstraction, which had been the terrain of male artists for hundreds of years.

Sartori and Holten may also be considered within this trajectory as moving beyond an obvious subversion of the male gaze by casting their gaze on what may seem small, insignificant objects: weeds, the movement of a person’s eye from paper to model and back, or the everyday ubiquity of Google image sourcing. Twenty-first century feminism reaches beyond the concern for the individual woman, and rather encompasses activism for all underrepresented groups as well as the planet. Where

1970s feminism campaigned for equal representation and pay, today women artists move beyond this myopic concern to encompass other issues and constituents in their work. The very fact of focusing on the forgotten or overlooked—weeds, dust, translation—places these artists in the trajectory of feminist practice.

MAPPING AS INCLUSION

Holten and Sartori’s work may be considered in the field of expanded drawing for their alternative depictions of people and events. Both artists tell stories through various forms of mapping, from the eyes of their students, to physically mapping streets. Again, it is the more ephemeral nature of some of their projects that make them anathema to the spectacular artistic production of today’s booming market. In their subtle, intellectual investigations into human behavior and history, these artists create powerful works.

Holten’s Tree Museum for the Bronx Museum in 2009 was a major public art project for this New York City borough. Holten focused on the Grand Concourse, celebrating the centenary of this four and a half mile thoroughfare that connects Manhattan to the North Bronx. While walking the area, she decided to let the trees tell the story, creating 100 listening points with individual narrators who related personal histories of the area. Visitors used cell phones to connect to 100 different people—from a local high school student to rappers and the architect Daniel Liebeskind—and hear their voices telling stories about the area. This

‘invisible museum’ comprised a different form of mapping: using an inclusive tool to congregate people of very different interests and backgrounds, to create a portrait of the area. Indeed, this concept of oral history is again a traditional practice, used here with today’s most ubiquitous technological device.

This can also be compared to Laboratorio della Vigna: Ten Years Later 2013, a residency project that Holten did for the ten year anniversary of her representation of Ireland in the Venice Biennale. Laboratorio della Vigna 2003 was a site-specific project that explored the ecosystem of the city. The artist established an office, where she held meetings with various people, edited texts and created booklets that became the core of the exhibition. Ten years later, she returned to Venice for a residency, which took the form of a series of walks, garden visits, conversations and informal discussions. For example, a secret garden walk in the Canareggio neighborhood was one highlight. In this project the mapping is done in conversation, as well as in drawing, and corresponds to a more ephemeral physical presence. Her work here relates to artists including Richard Long, Francis Alÿs, and Gabriel Orozco, whose walks and discussions formed the basis of much of their respective practices.

Sartori uses a different, but related means of mapping human interaction in a work that was originally projected on the large windows of the Greenhouse of the Venice Biennale Giardini in 2011, visible to all passersby. In her video Etude Op. 25 No. 10 in B Minor Homage to Chopin the partially obscured faces of a man and a woman are seen diametrically opposed in the frame. Their lips seem to mouth the notes to the dramatic notes on the piano. In one shot the male protagonist is positioned on the right side of the shot mouthing the forceful phrases while

the woman is on the left and corresponds to the more gentle, softer phrases of the music. This male aggressive/female passive scenario swaps after four minutes, with the female becoming the more forceful opponent in this abstract tête-à-tête. What looks like a dialogue then resembles escalation into an argument and back again. Sartori worked with the performers, who each used one sentence that is said repeatedly to appear as if mouthing the notes of the piece. The artist will never divulge what the sentence was; indeed, it is not important. What is paramount is how the piece speaks to the abstraction of language and the human interplay of communication. The figure on the right corresponds to the dominant side of the argument; when the woman takes that place the high notes seem to bang out on

the piano like bullets from a weapon. This is less about a gender struggle and more about the basic human struggle to communicate, negotiate and maintain harmony. In this video, as in The Drawers, small actions—here located only in the protagonists’ mouths—signify huge psychological leaps. Sartori is drawing with her performers, albeit creating invisible and ever shifting lines.

Linea is an exhibition that celebrates the subtle as well as grand gestures of Sartori and Holten. In an era where art has become another luxury item aside watches or yachts, these artists resist the spectacular. They find beauty in the

small gesture, in the investigation of surface and line. They work within a great tradition of art historical method, yet subvert this with their choice of subjects and their incredible gift for subtlety. In a world where communication is fleeting and ephemeral, Holten and Sartori write love letters for posterity, reminding the viewer that beauty is found in the tiniest of gestures.

da: MARIATERESA SARTORI : UNE MAIN, ENTRE RETINES  ET TYMPANS.

Non ?
