The Sound of Language (updated version 2023)

In coproduction with  Habibi Kiosk of  Münchner Kammerspiele, Munich, permanent collection Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice, thanks to  Galleria Michela Rizzo, Venice

What you are going to hear is completely meaningless. You will undergo the experience of listening to some poems which are semantically unrecognisable because of the altered order of consonants, though the rime, the metrical scansion, the accent and the intonation are mantained: the result is something absolutly incomprehensible but absurdly familiar. With this work I wish as far as is possible to restore the melody and musicality to be found in every language. In order to do so I have to cleanse words of the “distraction” of meaning and let their rhythmic or melodic aspects, now no longer suffocated by their meaning, come to light.I try to go back through hearing to something primary and forgotten: the pure and ancient sound of words, the raw experience of our first contact with the world.

C Infinite

C Infinite, soundwork, Loop, 2022, recording of a recorded radio sound

      1. do-infinito-di-mariateresa-sartori-9.mp3

Technically, these are fragments of chest C emitted by opera singers. These are recordings taken from the radio that I re-recorded to get the effect of distant, somewhat croaky sound of distant radio.

Having gone through the double recording shifts the emphasis from bel canto, the singing qualities of which we are no longer able to perceive, to the emission of sound, of human breath, and, since it is C di petto, the performative and assertive effort as a manifestation of power is evident, more than other notes.

The succession of C chest notes sung by different tenors proceeds in an ascending scale of tightness, that is, of duration in time and volume: the intent is to move gradually and almost inadvertently from an emission that expresses power, boldness, courage and heroism together, to a sound that is tinged with urgency, anguish, helplessness, gradually becoming a cry of alarm.

It is a succession without pause, without silence, eliminating the phase of inhaling air: everything becomes infinite emission, beyond time, leading to a place that has no beginning and no end: the work goes in a continuous cycle, just as it is proposed at the Studio G7 Gallery in Bologna. The sound source is hidden, the sound comes from nowhere, in a continuous crescendo and diminuendo, seamless.

THE PATHETIC ONES

video, loop, 2018, b/w, sound

with Kiki Dellisanti, Giovanni Dinello, Gustavo Frigerio, Antonella Mancino, Matilde Sambo

camera Furio Ganz, editing Mariateresa Sartori

music from Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky, Symphonie No 6 (Pathétique) op.74 in B minor director Yevgeny Mravinsky

thanks to: Ferruccio Busetto, Giorgio Busetto, Augusto Maurandi, Fabio Naccari, Lucia Veronesi, Fondazione Ugo e Olga Levi, Venezia

The Pathetic Ones, link to the video

The Pathetics move like puppets with motivations that elude us, passing from joy to despair, from fear to serenity, from aggression to desolation, abruptly, with no apparent motives other than internal ones made manifest by the music. They are driven by unconscious inner drives that determine dynamics, facts and destinies. Everything changes quickly and everything repeats itself in a kind of carousel without beginning or end. This is a work about human nature. We are “The Pathetics”.

Etude N.10 op. 25 Homage to Chopin 2021

Performers: Gustavo frigerio Mariateresa Sartori

piano: Vittorio Maggioli

2021

                                                                                                                        ”…you are the music

                                                                                                                                  While the music lasts”

                                                                                                                                                         T.S. Eliot

This new version features the young talent Vittorio Maggioli at the piano and, as performers, actor Gustavo Frigerio and myself. I felt the need to take an active part, notwithstanding the admirable performance of the 2011 version with Paola Pasqual and Fausto Sartori. Conceptually nothing has changed from the previous version, which is why I attach texts, comments and reviews from 2011.
