Below us

Below us, 2025, tiny fragments of world maps applied to canvas, 80 x 80 cm

The work draws on physiographic diagrams of the seabed from the mid-twentieth century. Specifically, the ocean ridge between America and Asia. The dry bed of the ocean.

All People Going

On the series of drawings All people going , Venezia, Milano, Marseille, 2009-2019

All people Going, Saint Marc Square, Venice, for 3 minutes and 5 seconds, pen with ink pigment on paper, 250 x 225, 2019,

installation view, Exhibition Telling Time. Roman Opalka Mariateresa Sartori, curated by Chiara Bertola, Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venezia 2019

Starting from the film material collected by the Fisicadellacittà research group at the University of Bologna (thanks to physicist Bruno Giorgini), I created drawings using a rudimentary and crude process: I followed the movement of pedestrians, tracing their path with a marker on a transparent sheet placed on the computer monitor. I then faithfully reproduced the result on large, simple sheets of white paper. The lines drawn in different directions create space, drawing Piazza San Marco, which does not actually exist. The method of creation makes the tracings imprecise and therefore useless from a scientific point of view. Yet this imprecision is not so approximate, in the sense that the movements are recorded ‘fairly’ faithfully, or rather as faithfully as human sensory perception allows. I am very interested in the modes of perception, so imperfect, yet sufficiently perfect, as to make our existence in the world possible. It is a mere recording, fairly accurate, of what happened. Not inventing anything, observing what was and knowing that things went exactly that way, even if everything could have gone differently.

Performance by Gustavo Frigerio, with  Gustavo Frigerio and Mariateresa Sartori, July 10/11,  2020,

Galleria Michela Rizzo, Venezia, Festival Assembramenti.

This performance starts from the observation of my 2 big drawings from the series All People Going, where lines actually reproduce pedestrians’ movements in Saint Marc Square in Venice on 26 February 2006 during a specific lapse of time (few minutes).
Gustavo Frigerio assumes in himself these configurations, becoming a line, a trajectory and a figure, moving on a white sheet of paper that has the same dimension of the drawings on the wall.
